2110 Consult Survey Famous Daily Express Building, Manchester
We carried out a Building Survey of the famous Grade II listed Daily Express Building on Great Ancoats Street in Manchester. Built in 1939 as the North of England headquarters of the Daily Express newspaper, Sir Owen Williams’ ‘streamline moderne’ design, with art deco features and a futuristic glazed façade, has been cited by Norman Foster as one of his top five favourite buildings.
To support an acquisition by Resolution Property, we were instructed to carry out a building survey of the property in summer 2015. The 75,600 sq. ft. commercial office building had been converted from a print works in 1995 and was in a general state of disrepair, having lain empty for over five years.
We undertook detailed inspections and coordinated work by specialist companies including building services engineers, cladding specialists, lift engineers, environmental and land surveyors. The final report described the extent of mechanical and electrical refurbishment required, as well as items necessary to ensure statutory compliance.
A detailed report and schedule of costs were provided for the full strip out and refurbishment of the building.
